Acupuncture and Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatica is a very painful health condition and it mainly occurs due to the disturbance caused to the sciatic nerve and hence is also referred to as the Sciatic Nerve Pain. Slipped disc, local injury, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are common causes of the sciatica. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that starts from the lower back or the hip region and extends to the leg where it gradually branches out into smaller nerves. If the sciatic nerve gets pinched or inflamed, intense pain starts from the lower back and may reach down to the foot where the nerve ends.

Acupuncture has been in practice for more than 5000 years and is a great treatment for pain relief. The use of acupuncture is strongly recommended for the treatment of sciatic nerve pain. By decreasing the need of pain medications it removes the negative side effects which usually occur due to the use of steroids and other allopathic medicines. Acupuncture stimulates the production of natural steroids and endorphins in the body which helps in the recovery process of sciatic nerve pain.  Natural steroids help to reduce inflammations while natural endorphins help in eliminating the body’s pain. Acupuncturists treat sciatica by administering fine needles to both the local pain site and even at distal points which help to treat the cause of the disorder and also reduces the symptoms.

Acupuncturists believe that all body parts are interconnected and it treats sciatica by first identifying the imbalances in the muscles and in the body as such. They believe in dealing with the root cause of the problem and that the treatment of the symptoms is not enough to get rid of the disorder. This traditional treatment believes in stimulating the self-healing powers of the body. Acupuncture theory states that sciatica is mainly caused by Qi and blood stagnation and it analyzes and treats the underlying factors which are causing this kind of disruption in the body. The Qi (energy) and blood stagnation in the body affects the soft tissues of the hips, lumbar and pelvic regions and this results in the acute pain that shoots out of the sciatic nerve as a result of muscle tension and spasm. The underlying imbalance which causes sciatica includes kidney and spleen Qi deficiency and liver Qi stagnation. Treatment of the underlying imbalances are important to prevent the recurrence of sciatic nerve pain.

The treatment for each individual in acupuncture is different, even if they are suffering from the same disorder. Every patient undergoes thorough diagnosis and examination in Traditional Chinese Medicine and this aids in understanding the Qi imbalance in the individual’s body. Exercise is also a vital part to acupuncture and specific exercises are recommended to the patients suffering from sciatica which is used in strengthening the abdominal and back muscles. Longer treatments periods of acupuncture for six months or more may be needed to help in relieving the sciatic nerve pain once and for all.
